“At Life University, graduation is so much more than a ceremony or a final milestone – it is a powerful symbol of transformation and new beginnings. As we gather to honor our graduates today, I want to share from my heart what this moment means to me, and what I hope it represents for our students, faculty, staff and alumni,” shared Dean of Students Dr. Michael Smith.
Every graduation speech inevitably reflects on the word commencement – a reminder that graduation is not the end, but the beginning. It marks the start of a new chapter, filled with opportunity, challenge and purpose.
“A few years ago, I created a program here at Life U called Life After Life with exactly that in mind. The purpose was simple yet essential – to help our students bridge the gap between earning a degree and launching a meaningful career. After all, as I often share during campus tours, ‘degrees don’t pay the bills – jobs do,’” said Dr. Smith.
This philosophy drives the work they do in Student Affairs. One of their goals is to strengthen Career Services, where they have placed dozens of students in internships (many of which have evolved into permanent positions) and expanded partnerships with amazing organizations like Porsche International and the Georgia Festival of Trees. Through these experiences, Student Affairs has helped prepare students not just to cross the graduation stage but to step confidently into the workforce.
“I like to think of it this way: Graduation on Friday. Celebration with family over the weekend. Orientation at your new job on Monday,” shared Dr. Smith. “That’s the ultimate goal. When we see our graduates transition smoothly into meaningful employment, we know we’ve done our part.”
Beyond career readiness, Life U Student Affairs has invested in developing the whole student. Life U’s newly chartered Toastmasters International chapter – the Lasting Purpose chapter – is an example of this. Communication, presence and professionalism are critical in today’s job market, where many interviews begin virtually. Toastmasters helps students build those skills, preparing them to shine in panel interviews and on-site meetings. These experiences, combined with leadership opportunities, service learning and community engagement, foster graduates who are not only employable but also empathetic, ethical and ready to serve.
“For our students walking across the stage today, my hope is that you feel immense pride, not just in earning a Life University degree, but in what that degree represents. It speaks to your commitment to intellectual growth, your development as a leader and your readiness to contribute meaningfully to your community,” said Dr. Smith. “I hope when you wear your Life U gear at work or out in the world, people recognize you as someone who embodies our values of Vitalism, Lasting Purpose and Integrity.”
Dr. Smith shared the following about today’s graduation and beyond.
“To our faculty and staff, today is a moment of celebration for you, too. You have walked alongside our graduates on their academic journey. I encourage you to pause, take pictures with your students, meet their families and share in the joy of this moment. Graduation is not just an academic exercise – it’s a shared achievement and a lasting memory. You’ve been mentors, guides and champions for these students, helping shape who they are and who they will become.
And to our alumni, I hope graduation renews your connection to Life U. Each new class of graduates carries forward the legacy you helped build. Together, we create a community known not only for professional excellence but for compassion, integrity and service.
In the end, our graduates depart to serve as professionals, as citizens and as contributors to a better world. Our work at Life U is to ensure they leave here ready to do just that. And that, to me, is the true beauty and purpose of graduation.”
