At Life University, every individual brings a unique story and passion that contributes to our vibrant community. Today, we shine the spotlight on Terri Carter, Chief Human Resources Officer, whose dedication to people and organizational growth is making a profound impact at Life U.

Terri Carter joined Life University on May 6, 2024, bringing with her over 25 years of experience in Human Resources. Before coming to Life U, she held executive human resources roles in education and health care, specializing in organizational management and leadership development. With a bachelor’s degree from Oglethorpe University and an MBA from the University of Phoenix, Carter has cultivated a deep understanding of people-centered leadership.

Her journey to Life U was serendipitous—a combination of personal circumstances and a deep connection to the university’s mission of holistic education. The core values of “To Give, To Do, To Serve, To Love” resonated with her vision of a human resources department that not only supports employees but actively enriches their experiences. Since stepping into her role, Carter has worked diligently to streamline systems, enhance accuracy and build programs that support faculty and staff. Her approach prioritizes three key principles: customer service, accuracy and accountability. Under Carter’s leadership, Life U’s Human Resources Department has evolved into a space where employees feel valued, heard and supported.

“We have been focused on perfecting systems for benefits, payroll and overall human resources functions,” she explains. “Now, we’re shifting toward what excites me most—people programs. Our goal is to enhance the culture, strengthen leadership and invest in our employees’ personal and professional growth.”

Beyond her professional role, Carter is an advocate for community engagement and personal growth. She lives in Cabbagetown, an in-town neighborhood on the East side of Atlanta, in a converted historic cotton mill loft, and she enjoys participating in neighborhood festivals and clean-up events. She’s also a dedicated reader, fitness enthusiast and proud owner of Fred Hampton, her feisty 11-pound yorkie.

Her greatest joy, however, is her daughter, a SCAD graduate with a creative spirit that continues to inspire her.

“If I weren’t her mother, I’d still want to be her friend,” she shares with pride.

Carter believes in a two-way relationship between an organization and its employees.

“Companies shouldn’t just take from employees; they should pour into them as well,” she emphasizes.

Her vision for Life U’s Human Resources Department is to create an environment where employees are not just seen as workers, but as individuals with aspirations beyond their current roles.

“I want our faculty and staff to come to Human Resources not just for benefits or payroll, but to talk about their future goals, leadership aspirations and personal development. Whether you want to grow within Life U or pursue a dream elsewhere, we want to equip you with the tools to thrive.”

To her colleagues at Life U, Carter offers this advice: “Engage with us. Let us know what you need to be the best version of yourself. We’re here to support you in your journey.”

Terri Carter is not just shaping policies; she’s shaping lives. And at Life U, that makes all the difference.
