Digital Marketing Strategist, Web Developer

“Turning Passion into Purpose Through Design and Community”

At Life University (Life U), we’re proud to spotlight the fantastic individuals who bring passion, innovation and spirit to our campus community. Today, we’re excited to introduce Monica Hackett, a Digital Marketing Specialist and Web Developer who’s infusing her creative energy and strategic mindset into the heart of Life U’s digital transformation.

Originally from West Orange, New Jersey, Hackett made her way to Atlanta in 2016 to attend the prestigious Spelman College.

“Spelman was a transformative experience,” Hackett shares. “I came in pre-med with plans to pursue a master’s in bioethics at Emory, but the pandemic shifted everything.”

As COVID-19 disrupted plans around the globe, Hackett found herself diving deeper into her curiosity for tech and creativity.

“I was indoors with time on my hands, so I started teaching myself new software, and my passion for digital media just kept growing. I’d always been tutoring computer science during undergrad, so it was a natural transition,” explained Hackett.

Her post-graduation journey began with a role as a digital media specialist, eventually evolving into a marketing coordinator position. But it didn’t stop there; she also founded New Foundations Media, a brand and web design business Hackett continues to run part-time.

“Starting my own business gave me the space to fully explore my creative side,” Hackett explains.

When a round of layoffs pushed her to reevaluate her next steps, Life U came into the picture.

“Finding Life U felt like perfect timing,” shared Hackett. “I’ve always had a passion for health sciences, and combining that with my love for art and digital design just made sense.”

Bringing a visionary mindset to her role, Hackett has already set her sights on the future.

“I want to help take Life U into the modern digital space. I see the potential here, and I want to be the person helping to bring those ideas to life – literally,” said Hackett.  “One day I’d love to lead a team that executes innovative digital projects across campus.”

But Hackett’s involvement at Life U doesn’t end at her desk. From day one, she looked for ways to engage more deeply with the campus community.

“I joined the Biggest Loser challenge for faculty and staff. Shout out to Jermaine and Lori for making it so much fun! Cycling, yoga, just being active – it’s been a great way to connect with others and take care of myself.”

She’s also rekindled her high school love of basketball, shooting hoops in the fitness center and connecting with the women’s basketball coach.

“There’s just so much to explore here. I’m hoping to walk the trail soon too; it’s on my list!”

Family plays a big role in Hackett’s life as well.

“I’m the second oldest of five siblings; we’re really close. Most of our names on my dad’s side start with ‘M’ – fun fact,” shared Hackett. “My dad is actually visiting me right now, and my younger sister is living with me too.”

When asked about the difference between New Jersey and Georgia, Hackett reflects with warmth.

“Atlanta is more homey, more laid-back. People seem genuinely happy here – more fulfilled. I think people come to the South to find their purpose, and that’s what I did.”

She also has some wonderful advice for new faculty and staff.

“Be patient – with yourself and others. There’s so much to take in, and it’s OK to ask for help or to slow down when needed. For those already here, extend grace to the new folks. It really goes a long way.”

And for those just starting their journey at Life U: “Don’t just do your job. Explore. There’s so much to see and experience on campus. Step out of your silo; you might find new friends, new opportunities and a whole new perspective.”

With her drive, creativity and community-minded spirit, Monica Hackett is already making an indelible mark on the University. We’re grateful to have her here, and we can’t wait to see the digital future she helps us build.
