Assistant Professor of Psychology

Meet Dr. Mitch Ferguson, an inspiring member of our Life University family. Dr. Ferguson has dedicated over 30 years to teaching psychology, and for the past 12 years, he’s been an integral part of Life U’s Division of Social Sciences. Originally from Alabama, Dr. Ferguson’s academic journey began at Auburn University for his undergraduate studies. He then earned his master’s degree from the University of South Alabama and completed his doctorate at the University of West Florida in Pensacola.

Dr. Ferguson’s path to a full-time position at Life University was marked by perseverance and dedication. Before joining us, he spent many years as an adjunct professor, teaching at various institutions including Argosy University. He started as an adjunct professor at Life U and later became the provisional coordinator, supporting students needing academic assistance.

In 2016, Dr. Ferguson secured a full-time position as an advisor, and by the 2017 Fall Quarter, he had transitioned to a full-time faculty role. Dr. Ferguson’s contributions go beyond teaching; he embodies the supportive, family-like atmosphere that sets Life U apart.

With a background in mental health, Dr. Ferguson initially worked as a clinician before fully transitioning to academia. His passion for teaching grew over time, and he found his niche in educating future generations of psychologists. Despite his long history in clinical work, teaching remains his primary focus and passion.

Dr. Ferguson is also an innovator in student engagement. He recently initiated the Psychology Film Club, driven by his love for movies. This informal activity that he hopes to create into a formal club has been a hit among students, providing an engaging way to explore psychological concepts through film. Dr. Ferguson, along with Dr. Deidre Meiggs and Dr. Stephanie Wakefield, select movies from their areas of expertise, creating a unique learning experience that blends education and entertainment.

As Dr. Ferguson continues to inspire his students and colleagues, his commitment to serving students and fostering a supportive academic environment remains unwavering. His journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the impact of passionate teaching. Join Dr. Ferguson and the rest of the Life U community in celebrating the rich, diverse experiences that make our university a place of growth and discovery.

Dr. Ferguson recommends to other faculty, “Just try to be student-centric and remember that we’re here to serve the students. That’s what we should be doing, and that should be our focus. “me
