“Enthusiastically Answering the Call”
It all started with a knee injury. Little did she know it would shape her whole career. At the time, Farrah Bowman was a competitive dancer taken out of commission, unable to do what she loved because of the pain. In fact, the cartilage wasn’t receiving adequate nutrients or blood, rendering the extremity essentially unusable and almost bone-on-bone in sensation. Bowman received physical therapy at the time, but she found that the “lens in which they were providing care was limited.” This experience initially inspired her to pursue a career in physical therapy (PT) and rehabilitation, seeking a healthier paradigm from which to structure patient care.
She tried and explored everything under the sun in that realm, from speech therapy to occupational therapy to working with PT patients combating a wide variety of challenges. Yet, she still found herself wanting more, knowing she could do more to promote whole health and wellness, but unsure what that looked like. Then her mom began receiving chiropractic care. Bowman connected with her mom’s chiropractor, bonding over their shared alma mater, Auburn University, where Bowman earned her B.S. in Exercise Science and Kinesiology. The chiropractor was also an alumni of the Life University’s (Life U) Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) program, and after their discussion, Bowman felt prompted to look more into Life U.
She identified with Life U’s philosophy, particularly with Vitalism. The concept of vitalism – essentially meaning that the body is self-healing and self-maintaining as long as interferences are removed – stood out to her as it perfectly articulated her personal understanding of true health care.
“Chiropractic really chose me. It was really like I answered the call,” Bowman said.
Once Bowman understood what principled Chiropractic was all about, she was all in.
“If you’re looking for a place that’s going to allow you to have a well-rounded perspective to serve any and every one that walks into your office one day, Life University is the place for that,” Bowman said.
“Because they say oftentimes that experience is the best teacher, and it truly is. You won’t know what you’ll do until you’re faced with it. And you’ll get that here.”
It doesn’t take long speaking to Bowman before understanding that she is a student who gets it and is passionate about her future career. That charisma is largely what contributed to her becoming a Student Ambassador, serving with her fellow Student Ambassadors to optimize the overall experience of current and prospective Life U students, as well as guests. And that’s not all. She is also a research assistant in the Dr. Sid. E. Williams Center for Chiropractic Research (CCR), as well as serving as the Convention Planning Committee Ambassador Chair for the American Black Chiropractic Association (ABCA), supporting everything from high-level coordination to on-the-ground execution. With a work ethic this robust, the future Dr. Bowman is bound to achieve phenomenal things and serve as an example to the students following her lead.
