As frustrating as it is for someone to struggle with persistent pain, it can be equally disheartening for the loved ones who stand beside them, feeling helpless to provide any true comfort. It can be especially frustrating when dealing with cases of chronic or unexplained pain, when the patient has seen doctor after doctor, spent considerable money and tried a veritable pharmacy of drugs to correct the issue without any lasting relief. Something must change.

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

The commonly referenced quote above is often associated with Albert Einststein, though direct attribution is difficult to ascertain; the wisdom of the adage remains. Many people seeking healing and pain relief solutions can get caught in a revolving door of doctors and specialists, with little progress toward optimized health. As such, chiropractors are used to being introduced to patients who are at their wits’ end, feeling they have tried everything else and are finally willing to give Chiropractic a chance.

Yet it doesn’t have to be that way, because Chiropractic can be more than a last resort and is, in fact, intended to serve as a preventive intervention, not simply a corrective one. Due to biases and misconceptions that persist around what chiropractic care is and isn’t, it’s natural for a potential new patient to have concerns about whether chiropractic care is the right fit for them.

If you have a loved one who you think might be a good candidate for chiropractic care, here are some tips to help them feel more at ease:

  • Make a point to tell your loved one all about the benefits of chiropractic care, how it can alleviate pain, improve mobility and overall health and well-being.
  • Be specific about how chiropractic care can be a resource to address your loved one’s particular health concerns, such as headaches, back pain, arthritis, injury recovery and more.
  • If possible, locate credible research articles that illustrate how chiropractic care can help alleviate a loved one’s specific health challenges.
  • If you are currently engaged in chiropractic care, explain how chiropractic care has helped you feel better and reach your health goals.
  • If they are willing, and your chiropractor is amenable to it, offer to bring them with you to your next chiropractic appointment. Then your chiropractor can better explain the purpose and the philosophy of chiropractic care so that your loved one better understands all that is involved. Seeing a chiropractic adjustment firsthand can also be helpful, provided your chiropractor explains step-by-step what is happening. For others, it may be jarring to see without full context, so that is also something to consider.
  • If they are worried about going alone to a first appointment, offer to tag along.
  • If cost is a concern, offer to pay for their first visit as a gift. Some chiropractic offices offer gift certificate programs. There are many chiropractors who accept insurance and/or provide care on a sliding scale. Additionally, if your loved one is located near Marietta, Georgia, Life Chiropractic Centers, located on the Life University campus, can provide comprehensive, low-cost chiropractic care.

Remember, there are some cases where chiropractic care may not be appropriate, such as with individuals suffering from severe osteoporosis, cancer in the spine, increased risk of stroke and other concerns. A licensed chiropractor will collect a medical history and determine possible care options if applicable.
