Marietta, Georgia – January 24, 2022 – Life University (Life U) undertook significant repairs to its Lupo Family Field after historic flooding caused extensive damage in early September 2021. The University completed the repairs ahead of schedule last Friday, January 21.
A storm on September 7 and 8, 2021 included torrential downpours, dropping nearly four inches of rain in the Marietta area and causing flash floods that sent water pouring through streets, homes and vehicles. Rottenwood Creek, a tributary of the Chattahoochee River which runs through the Life U campus, was among the local streams that overflowed their banks. The Cobb County Emergency Management Agency received hundreds of damage reports from residents in the weeks after the storm.
“We are extremely grateful for the University’s support in getting this field reconstructed as quickly as possible,” said Life U Director of Athletics Jayme Pendergast. “We are thrilled to have our beloved Lupo Family Field back and to be able to provide a place on campus for our student-athletes to practice and compete again. I commend our student-athletes and coaches for being committed to success despite the unfortunate circumstances, as well as my administrative team for finding and securing many alternate locations so we could continue practice and competitions. I’m looking forward to having our field sports back home.”
Lupo Family Field is the home to Life University men’s and women’s soccer as well as men’s and women’s rugby squads and women’s lacrosse. The field has played host to numerous USA Rugby Playoff and Championship games and serves as a venue for numerous sports organizations in the Marietta community.
A member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Mid-South Conference (MSC), the Life University Athletic Department fields 23 teams in 11 women’s sports, 11 men’s sports and one coed sport, in addition to club and intramural athletic programs. Life U Running Eagles have earned both team and individual National Championships as well as MSC Championships, All American, All Conference and academic honors.
Founded in 1974, Life University is a health sciences institution most known for its College of Chiropractic, the largest single-campus College of Chiropractic in the world. Undergraduates can pursue 14 undergraduate degrees; a pre-chiropractic, degree-seeking pathway; and three graduate degrees within the College of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies.
